Dr. Claudia Vega
Performs mercury research in Madre de Dios in Peru to test mercury levels from mining for gold, and how it effected the ecosystem and the people in the area. She used technology to test water sample parts per million of mercury and how it effected diets of locals depending on their intake of different foods. Those who had more meats in their diets tested higher for mercury poison.
Dr. Frank Booth
Dr. Booth explained how inactivity on Earth can increase abdominal fat. His lab experiment consisted of running rats on a wheel for 21 days, then locking the wheel to constrain the rat. After running the rats their fat on their abdomen was measured. The results showed that when the rats exercised, they had a lower percent of fat on their abdominal region than when they did not exercise. Animals gained more fat because they ate more while being restricted from running on the wheel.
Dr. Exazevia Logan
Dr. Logan discussed certain risk factors that contribute to hypertension such as diet, stress, alcohol/smoking, sex, race, and lack of exercise. However he also discussed ways to lower blood pressure as well. Then he gave therapeutic ways that could also lower blood pressure. More people have taken control of treating their hypertension, which has lowered the risk of stroke.
Dr. Bita Nickkholgh
Men age 45 and old, then often struggle with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is more diverse, but it is more common in African-American men. More biology reasons attribute to it such as genetics rather than lifestyle. There are different forms of prostate cancer: aggressive or advanced which is localized then can spread to close organs. Some cancers may become resistant to certain types of treatments.
Dr. Vasquez-Kool
His research is on the phenotypes of certain characteristics, and how it relates to genetics. He discussed different traits that contribute to his research. He used quantitative research to correlate the relationship between the traits, for future generations.
